"Three area fifth graders took honors in the third annual regional Elementary Mathematics Invitational (EMI) hosted by the Winston-Salem State University Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education and the WSSU Department of Mathematics as part of the North Carolina Science Festival.
Arun Somasundaram from Brunson Elementary School in Winston-Salem earned the first place award; Arvin Singh from Guy B. Teachey Elementary School in Asheboro took second place; and Lucas Jorgensen of Morgan Elementary School in Clemmons placed third in the mathematics competition.
The EMI is designed to stimulate interest in mathematics and provide recognition for outstanding elementary mathematics students.  In addition to the competition for fourth and fifth graders, there was a family math session for the parents of contest participants to provide them with math activities to utilize at home.  Dr. Vincent Snipes and Dr. Pamela Moses-Snipes of the WSSU Department of Mathematics co-chaired the EMI program.
In addition to the competition, experts in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) spoke about their careers, the integration of STEM in their professions, and the STEM connections to our daily lives.
The 2014 North Carolina Science Festival ran across the state for two weeks and featured programs to showcase science, technology, engineering and mathematics."
